Kids’ Musicals

Based on John Bunyan’s famous allegory Pilgrim’s Progress, this musical version PILGRIM’S PROGRESS: THE JOYFUL JOURNEY was composed in Beaufort, South Carolina, for the youth choir of the Marine Corps Air Station Chapel in 1985.  They presented it there and to the Marine Corps trainees at Parris Island Marine Corps Recruit Depot.  Since then, it has been performed in numerous churches and schools across the United States and in Canada.

Some of the lyrics and a fictionalized account of the production of this play were included in the mystery novel DELECTABLE MOUNTAINS in 2005 by best-selling author Earlene Fowler.

Faced with death and judgment in the City of Destruction, Christian leaves all and risks everything on his journey to the Cross and Celestial City.  He and his friends Faithful and Hopeful are tempted and tested by deceivers and foes such as Worldly Wisdom, Talkative, Mr. Envy, Ms. Two-Tongues, and Judge Hategood.

The pilgrims learn wisdom and courage as they stand up for truth in Vanity Fair, only to fall prey to Giant Despair and then fall under the spell of the Enchanted Ground.   But the Word of God and a song of praise set them free and speed them on their way.  At last, they reach the river and look over into the promised land.

Children and audiences will long remember the Bible truths and verses in the easily memorized songs and script of this delightful play (55 min.).  With flexible casting for middle elementary through junior high schoolers, everyone can have a special part.   Older kids and adults will have fun with this too!

Original songs include:  “City of Destruction,” “Pilgrims Gotta Progress,” “Nothing but the Blood” (adapted from the hymn by Robert Lowry 1826-1899), “Shout-About Day,” “Talkative’s Patter Song,” “Giant Despair,” and “I’m Walking in Sonlight.”  Click on to read the story and  hear the songs!

Reproducible scripts include music scored for unison/two-part choir with solos and easy piano. Suggestions for rhythm instruments and hand motions or choreography get everyone involved.  Listening CDs may be copied for the entire cast.
