A Little Night Music

In the world of nightmare, events rushed to a hideous conclusion. Teetering on the edge of the unthinkable, I woke up just in time to hear joyful music in my head–like a lullaby sung over a screaming child. While my mind fled through nightmare country, my spirit had been singing in praise!
David’s life became a kind of nightmare when he had to flee from King Saul’s treachery into the wilderness, where he was hunted from cave to cave.  He had several opportunities to kill Saul, but he refused to slay “the Lord’s anointed.”  Instead, David waited for years on God’s timing as he and his not-so-merry men fought the Philistines and evaded Saul.
No wonder he was sometimes sleepless, anxious, and depressed.
PSALMÂ 57:4
I am in the midst of lions;
I lie down with those who devour men.
Their teeth are spears and arrows;
Their tongues are sharp swords.
These were no nightmare imaginations but real dangers, yet his spirit sang out to the Lord. Deep in the cave of Adullum, David fought his fears with prayer and praise. (57: 1-3, 5)
Be gracious to me, God, be gracious to me,
For I take refuge in You.
I seek refuge in the shadow of Your wings
Until danger passes.
I cry out  to God Most High,
To God who fulfills His purpose for me.
God, be exalted above the heavens;
Let Your glory be over all the earth.
Now we live in the land of midnight sun, as our world grows darker toward dawn. We have the promise of Heaven, where there will be no night and no nightmares. No Halloween fantasies will haunt the Lord’s children.  Our greatest fears will be banished in the light of eternal day. The Devil will be cast into the fire of God’s judgment; Death itself will be destroyed. The Son of David, the Bright Morning Star, the Lord Jesus Christ, will reign forever and ever.
In the cave the song of the night sustained the young warrior.  At the first light of day, he rose renewed to greet the sun.  (57:8-11)
Wake up, my soul!
Wake up, harp and lyre!
I will wake up the dawn.
I will praise You, Lord, among the people;
I will sing praise to You among the nations.
For Your faithful love is as high as the heavens;
Your faithfulness reaches to the clouds.
God, be exalted above the heavens;
Let Your glory be over all the earth.
Father, I pour out my soul to you, all my hopes, fears, and imaginations.   I take refuge in the shelter of Your wings. Guard my mind. I choose to take every thought captive to You, to focus on Your faithfulness and love. I put my hope in You, and I will praise You even in the night. I rest in You alone, my Salvation, my Rock and my Stronghold. By the help of Your Holy Spirit,  I will follow close to You. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen
